Comforting friend Dec 11, 2010
By Ronald L. James
"Amazon-nut"
This was purchased for an elderly woman with middle stage Alzheimer's. The hope was that it would be comforting and a needed distraction from anxious fixation about the past. It has exceeded expectations. She adores it, has named it, talks to it and sometimes in playful mode will have it talk back.
The bear is very well constructed with a hefty weight for such a small toy due to the filling of buckwheat and lavender. It is not necessary to always heat up the bear but on cold days, it is an added bonus. The facial expression and eyes lend a friendly (almost real-like) quality to this stuffed toy. He has little padded feet that give that extra touch of realism. The bear is the perfect size to easily cradle in your arm and carry, as one might a little baby.
I would think any child would love this toy but it's nice to know it transcends age. It may well be helpful for other people with Alzheimer's, especially those who do not have an actual pet. Whatever the purpose, this is a quality item and I highly recommend it.

Great toy even for a 2 yr old! Dec 13, 2010

"Lav"
Got this for my son's B-day (put it on his Amazon wish list because of the great reviews). I agree, its fabulous! Its bigger than I expected but thats good thing. The first few times we took apart the plane and showed him how to use the screwdriver to twist the screws in and out (they're big plastic screws, about the size of your pinkie). The battery operated "power tool" isn't really strong enough to take out the screws unless they're not tightened much, but he likes that it has attachments (like dads) and makes noise and goes around. The attachments are chunky and good for little hands. We think they work better used by themselves, manually. When he gets frustrated that the "power tool" isn't unscrewing the screws, he uses it that way instead. Great learning tool! I thought it might be something he'd have to grow into but he's able to use it w/not too much "teaching" (or watching us do it), and his 6 yr. old sister likes it too! Its a confidence booster to get it back together for the kids (and even me too, since I'm not really mechanically inclined). My son can't do it all on his own yet, but it has such potential to be a toy that has years of teaching skills and built nice and sturdy too!
