Keep cool! May 03, 2004

Maybe garlic squoosher would be a better description--lay the mat on the counter, fold it over your garlic clove, and give it a whack. Then reveal your garlic clove, ready for hand-peeling, without a knife. I agree that this use pales in comparison with use as a jar opener (you'll throw those little rubber disks away), potholder, and counter protector. However, because I often take my hot meal to the computer, on my lap, the best use I've found for these mats, which don't conduct heat, is as a layer under my dinner plate. You may use it either as a layer over another plate to prevent heat conduction (because the mat is tacky, there are no plate-sliding surprises) or directly on your lap.

Good luck getting one Aug 03, 2007

I would love to have one of these. However, every time I order one, Amazon delivers a seven-inch square HotSpot. Too bad there is no way to communicate this other than through a "review". Too bad that I have returned two small ones because the ordering for this item is so messed up. Too bad I have to go elsewhere to buy this.

Holds up to a super hot cast iron skillet Apr 15, 2008
By Mrs. Kilo Delta I bought this silicone mat because I had been using kitchen towels, folded over, to place hot dishes, pans and skillets on when removing them from the microwave, oven or stove. Then, I'd wash my hands and go to dry them, only to find that all my towels were underneath hot pans! I clearly needed something else to place hot dishes on.
Enter, the Big HotSpot silicone counter mat! Dearest Husband was skeptical when I bought it.... after all, why spend more money on something when we had been using kitchen towels to do the same thing? (He prefers to dry his hands on paper towels, so he didn't have the "no towel available" problem I had.) When I invited him to place the super hot cast iron skillet on the silicone pad, he did so doubtfully, thinking the mat was going to melt right under that skillet. To his surprise, it didn't melt, and when he lifted the mat to feel the granite countertop underneath, he found that none of the heat had gotten through the silicone mat to the countertop below. Perfect! He's now glad that I purchased this item, and I'm going to buy more of these to have on hand for "Baking Day".
Regarding the color, I have this silicone mat in clear, which isn't really clear, but I knew that when I bought it, thanks to another review here. It's more like frosted white... not opaque white, but translucent white.

A Granite Must-Have Nov 23, 2004

Granite countertops require something between themselves and your hot, hot pan. This is perfect item - it's large and conducts the heat nicely. So get this and toss the number of the countertop crack repair guy.

Only wish it came in larger size! Jan 26, 2007
By D. P. Taylor Purchased two of these to place on my counter next to my new glass-top stove- almost covers entire space. I primary use as a trivet when removing items from oven, perfect as it does not conduct heat, can take hot metal pans without scorching, and in "clear/frost" is not too noticeable on my counter.
Highly recommend this item!
